Coloring Contest



The 2013 L.A. Times Festival of Books/USC Family of Schools Coloring Contest (the “Contest”) begins March 1, 2013 at 9:00:00 a.m. PT and ends April 5, 2013 at 9:00:00 a.m. PT. By submitting an entry, each contestant agrees to the Official Rules and warrants that his or her entry complies with all requirements set out in the Official Rules. This is a skill-based contest, and chance plays no part in the determination of winners.


Contest is open only to students currently enrolled in one of the following USC Family of Schools:

  • And to students who are in grades K through 6, currently enrolled in a public or private school or participating in a home-school program and legal U.S. residents residing in one of the following Southern California counties: Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino, Riverside, Ventura or San Diego who visit and enter via mail entry only.

Employees (and their immediate family members (spouse, parent, child, sibling and their respective spouses, regardless of where they live) or persons living in the same households of such employees, whether or not related) of Los Angeles Times Communications LLC or the University of Southern California, and of their subsidiaries and affiliates are not eligible. Void where prohibited and outside California.


Each entry consists of a completed, official entry form (the “Entry Form”). Entry Forms will be made available at the USC Family of Schools by USC representatives. The USC representatives will hand the Entry Forms out to potential contestants. The Entry Form will also be available for download at You do not need to submit any personal information to download the Entry Form. Accurately complete an Entry Form with the required information, including your name, age/grade, school, and teacher’s name; and submit it to the USC representative visiting your school. You may also mail the Entry Form directly to: University of Southern California Office of Civic Engagement, BKS 400, MC 2542, 3551 Trousdale Parkway, Los Angeles, CA 90089. You may enter only by hand delivery or by mail. No form of email or other online entry will be accepted.

All entries must be submitted and received by April 5, 2013. By submitting a coloring and signing the entry form, you promise that the coloring you submitted: is your original creation; has not been copied in whole or in part from any other work; does not say bad or false things about other people; and has never been previously published or submitted to any other competition.


Winners will be chosen on or around April 9, 2013. Winners will be judged on the following criteria:

  • Originality
  • Creativity
  • Whimsy

Decisions of the judges (designated by the Sponsors) are final and binding. Sponsors will attempt to notify the teachers of the potential winners using the information provided in the Entry Form by end of business on Tuesday, April 3. If a winner’s teacher cannot be contacted or does not respond within 48 hours of the first contact attempt, if a winner does not fulfill the eligibility requirements, if a winner does not adhere to the Official Rules, or if the prize notification is returned as undeliverable, that winner will be disqualified and Sponsors may select a new potential winner by the same criteria set forth above.



The First Place winner may have his/her photograph and name published in the Los Angeles Times and will receive a $500 Barnes & Noble gift card.

Five honorable mentions will receive a $100 Barnes & Noble gift card.

Total approximate retail value of all prizes: $1,000. If First Prize winner’s name and photo are not published for any reason, no alternate prize will be awarded. No prize transfer, assignment, or substitution by winners permitted. Gift cards subject to terms and conditions thereon. If a prize (or part of a prize) is unavailable, the Sponsors, in their discretion, reserve the right to substitute the original prize (or that part of the prize) with an alternative prize to the equal monetary value and/or specification, unless to do so would be prohibited by law.



By entering the Contest, all contestants grant an irrevocable, perpetual, worldwide non-exclusive license to Sponsors, to reproduce, distribute, display and create derivative works of the entries (along with a name credit) in connection with the Contest and promotion of the Contest, in any media now or hereafter known, including, but not limited to: Display at a potential exhibition of winners; publication of a book featuring select entries in the Contest; publication in Los Angeles Times and University of Southern California publications, or online highlighting entries or winners of the Contest. Contestants consent to the Sponsors doing or omitting to do any act that would otherwise infringe the contestant’s “moral rights” in their entries. Display or publication of any entry on an authorized party’s website does not indicate the contestant will be selected as a winner. Sponsors will not be required to pay any additional consideration or seek any additional approval in connection with such use. Additionally, by entering, each contestant grants to Sponsors the unrestricted right to use all statements made in connection with the Contest, and pictures or likenesses of contestants, or choose not to do so, at their sole discretion. Sponsors will not be required to pay any additional consideration or seek any additional approval in connection with such use. Winners (and winner’s parent or legal guardian if winner is a minor) may be required to complete, sign and return an Affidavit of Eligibility and Liability Release and Publicity Release within three days of the date Sponsors send such documents to the winner.



By entering this Contest, all contestants agree to release, discharge, and hold harmless Sponsors and their partners, affiliates, subsidiaries, advertising agencies, agents and their employees, officers, directors, and representatives from any claims, losses, and damages arising out of their participation in this Contest or any Contest-related activities and the acceptance and use, misuse, or possession of any prize awarded hereunder.

Sponsors assume no responsibility for any error, omission, interruption, deletion, defect, or delay in operation or transmission; communications line failure; theft or destruction of or unauthorized access to Entry Forms; or alteration of Entry Forms.



Contestants agree that this Contest is subject to and governed by the laws of the State of California and the forum for any dispute will be in the State of California, United States of America. To the extent permitted by law, the right to litigate, to seek injunctive relief or to make any other recourse to judicial or any other procedure in case of disputes or claims resulting from or on connection with this Contest are hereby excluded and any contestant expressly waives any and all such rights. Entries void if the Sponsors determine the entry is not an original, or if the Entry Form is illegible, incomplete, damaged, irregular, altered, counterfeit, produced in error or obtained through fraud or theft.

All federal, state, and local taxes, fees and surcharges on prizes are the sole responsibility of the prize winners. The Sponsors reserve the right to verify the validity and originality of any entry and/or contestant (including a contestant’s identity and address) and to disqualify any contestant who submits an entry that is not in accordance with these Official Rules or who tampers with the entry process. Failure by the Sponsors to enforce any of its rights at any stage does not constitute a waiver of those rights.
